Types of Pears: There are many different types of pears that all go great with a variety of cheeses. Below you will find a list of the different types and what they pair best with.

Bosc: A rich, buttery pear that has firm flesh and is perfect for pairing with rich hard cheeses like aged cheddar or gouda. Bosc pears pair well with milder creamy blue cheese varieties like Roquefort, Stilton, and Maytag Blue. It also pairs well with mild goat cheese like Chevre in order to create a flavorful cream pie.

Braeburn: Full-bodied and slightly tart, Braeburn pears are great for pairing with a very mild blue cheese like Gorgonzola. It is also perfect for pairing with a mild brie such as Brillat-Savarin. This pear pairs well with creamy cheeses that have been aged longer, like sharp cheddar or Swiss.

Camellia: Camellia pears are sweet, soft to the bite, and full of flavor. They pair well with gouda or Gruyere cheese because of their earthy flavors. These types of pears go best at room temperature. The taste is mild but the texture is firm, so this pear pairs especially well with crusty bread.

Cortland: Cortland pears are medium-large in size and have a slightly ripened feel. This pear may be used as a substitute for Bosc when paired with hard cheeses or during tastings of old wines. This creamy cheese pairs best with this pear because their tastes complement each other. It also goes well to make a cream pie using goat cheese and Chevre together.

Earligold: Earligold pears are smaller in size, sweet but not overly so, and have a creamy texture. The pear’s taste is somewhat on the sweeter side. Pairing this may be a bit tricky because it has a mild flavor that can overpower many dishes. It goes well with cheddar cheese or cream cheese and honey, but not with asiago cheese or blue cheese when pairing for a salad.
